At that time an Italian brick or stone mason came to the worksite in a suit (usually heavy wool) carrying his canvas tool bag. He changed into his work clothes and at the end of the day he changed back into the suit and walked home.
After a pleasant conversation the gentleman picked up a bundle of clippings, larger than himself, and walked off.
The Produce Market was in the heart of Chicago. The Chicago Tribune print shop was nearby. Across the street was THE professional photo equipment and supply company. It was an interesting place for random pictures.
Some trade or regulatory event drew the press — a solo reporter in a Robert Hall suit, hand-held microphone wired to a tape recorder, no satellite truck with crew. The press, advertising studios, and other graphics houses were supported by a squad of couriers on Harleys camped out at the photo company. They carried and delivered film, tape, writing, etc. throughout the city with impunity to traffic.
The last time JRV saw motorcycle couriers was at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Most them were airline pilots with flexible schedules and a Harley.
After a quick preset of exposure and rough focus on the “Kiev Leica,” a turn on the heel and in 125/second, an image was captured that would be difficult to produce over an afternoon in a sketchbook.
